HORMONE CARE IN GILBERT, AZ

Hormonal Weight Gain in Gilbert, AZ

You are eating well. You are moving your body. And the scale will not budge, or it is climbing. If that sounds familiar, we want to say this plainly. It is probably not a willpower problem. At Onyx Integrative in Gilbert, we start by listening, because you know your own body better than anyone. Then our licensed naturopathic doctors (NMD) test your hormones to find out what is actually going on, and we build the plan with you from what your results show. In office across the East Valley, or by telemedicine for patients across the country.

What may be affecting your weight

What Can Cause Hormonal Weight Gain?

You have heard “eat less, move more” a hundred times. For a lot of people that advice does not work, and it is not because they are not trying hard enough.

Hormones control more than most people realize. They affect where your body stores fat, how strong your hunger signals are, and how easily you build and keep muscle. Muscle is a big part of how much energy you burn sitting still.

Your thyroid, your stress hormones, your blood sugar and your reproductive hormones are all part of that same system. Any one of them can contribute, and often more than one is involved. When something in there is off, your body can hold onto weight no matter how well you eat or how often you train. That is not a character flaw. It is biology, and biology is something we can measure.

The first thing we do is listen to your version of it, because you have been living in this body and we have not.

Hormones and weight gain

Why can't I lose weight no matter what I do?

This is the question people are most anxious to ask, so we will answer it first. You are not failing at this. Unexplained weight gain that resists diet and exercise is a real and common medical pattern, and it is worth looking into. Plenty of the people who reach us have been doing everything right for years and getting nowhere.

What that means for you depends on what is underneath it. Sometimes steadying blood sugar or treating a thyroid problem is enough for the effort you are already making to start showing up. Sometimes it is not, and a supervised medical weight loss plan runs alongside the hormone work. We will tell you honestly which one we think you are looking at, and we will tell you if we think your weight is being driven by something other than your hormones.

Symptom patterns

Which of these hormonal weight gain patterns sounds like you?

Weight gain rarely shows up on its own. It usually arrives with other clues, and those clues point somewhere. See which one of these sounds most like you. If more than one does, that is common too, and it is usually the real answer.
  • Thyroid

Weight gain, plus feeling tired, cold, or foggy

This pattern often points toward your thyroid. An underactive thyroid slows things down across the board, and the fatigue and the cold hands usually show up long before anyone thinks to check.

What we look at: full thyroid panel, free T3 and free T4, thyroid antibodies. More on thyroid treatment.

  • Cycle and skin

Weight around your middle, plus irregular periods, acne, or extra hair growth

This pattern often points toward PCOS (now officially PMOS). Insulin and androgens are usually both involved, which is why the weight and the skin and the cycle tend to move together.

What we look at: androgens, SHBG, fasting insulin, cycle history. More on PCOS and PMOS care.

  • Midlife

Weight gain that started with hot flashes, period changes, or broken sleep

In your 40s and beyond this often points toward perimenopause or menopause. Estrogen and progesterone shift for years before periods stop, and where your body puts weight shifts with them.

What we look at: full hormone panel, thyroid, sleep and symptom history. More on perimenopause care.

  • Blood sugar

Weight gain plus constant sugar or carb cravings, especially around your belly

This can point toward insulin resistance, which means your body is not handling blood sugar the way it should. It is one of the most common drivers we find, and it is measurable.

What we look at: fasting insulin, fasting glucose, HbA1c. More on blood sugar and diabetes care.

  • Stress

Weight gain plus feeling wired but tired, poor sleep, or a lot of stress

This can point toward cortisol, your body's main stress hormone. A long stress load changes both your appetite and where your body decides to store fat.

What we look at: cortisol across the day, thyroid, sleep review. More on adrenal and stress hormone care.

  • Men

Weight gain plus low energy, low muscle tone, or low sex drive

In men this often points toward low testosterone. Testosterone drops slowly, so most men adjust to feeling flat rather than noticing anything change.

What we look at: total and free testosterone, thyroid, metabolic markers. More on men’s hormones and TRT.

  • Medication

Weight gain that started after a new medication

Some medications genuinely cause weight gain as a side effect, and birth control is the one people ask us about most. Do not stop a prescription on your own. Bring it up with the doctor who prescribed it, and bring it up with us, so we are not chasing something that already has an explanation.

What we look at: your full medication timeline. More on what your first visit covers.

  • More than one

More than one of these sounds like you

That is common, and it is usually the real answer. Hormones work together rather than one at a time, and somebody with a slow thyroid very often has blood sugar trouble riding along with it.

What we look at: all of the above, together. More on how we look at the whole picture.

Not sure which of these is you? That is what a first visit is for.

Treatment

How we treat hormonal weight gain at Onyx Integrative

Once we know what is driving it, the plan follows the cause, and we build it with you rather than handing it to you. There is no standard protocol here, because two people with the same number on the scale can have completely different reasons for it.

Hormone support, where testing points that way

Thyroid support, hormone therapy through the menopause transition, or testosterone for men. More on hormone replacement therapy and men’s hormones.

A supervised weight loss plan, when it fits

Some patients need the hormone work and the weight work running at the same time. That may include medication where it is appropriate for you, and your doctor talks through what it does and what it does not do before anything is prescribed. See medical weight loss at Onyx.

Nutrition aimed at your blood sugar

Steadier blood sugar is the lever that does the most work in most of these patterns, and it is not the same thing as eating less. We build it around what you actually eat rather than a plan you will abandon in March.

Sleep, stress and movement

Short sleep and a long stress load both change appetite hormones. We work on them because they move the numbers, not as an afterthought at the end of the visit.

Targeted supplements and botanicals

Tied to what your testing shows, not a shelf of bottles handed over at the door. If a supplement is not doing anything for you, we stop it.

Looking beyond hormones, when needed

Sometimes hormones are only part of the picture. When that happens, we look at other factors that may be affecting your weight and adjust the plan accordingly, rather than forcing a treatment that may not be right for you.

Why Onyx

Why Gilbert and East Valley patients choose Onyx when weight will not move

Plenty of the people who reach us have been at this for years. They were told to eat less and move more, told their labs were normal, or handed a diet plan and sent home. Some of them have stopped believing anything is actually wrong. That is not what you will hear from us. What is different here is that we listen first, then we test. The first visit runs 75 minutes and most of it is you talking. The first lab panel goes wider than a routine one. Then we build the plan with you from what your results show, and we keep adjusting it.
  • A 75-minute first visitLong enough to hear the whole history before anyone suggests anything, not only the one line on the intake form.
  • Four hormone systems tested togetherThyroid, insulin, cortisol and sex hormones read side by side, because a single test in isolation is exactly how this gets missed.
  • Results read next to your historyYour results inform the assessment and your doctor decides the plan with you, rather than a number deciding it for either of you.
  • Three licensed naturopathic doctorsSeeing patients at the Gilbert clinic, or by telemedicine for patients across the country.

Meet your doctors

Dr. Stephanie Nichols, NMD

Onyx's founder, working mainly in women's hormones, thyroid health, and PCOS (also called PMOS). On a weight case Dr. Stephanie wants the timeline first, because when the weight started usually says more than the number on the scale does.

Founder · Naturopathic Physician

Dr. Kasey Nichols, NMD

Connects hormones, digestion, metabolism and mindset. Dr. Kasey works the insulin and blood sugar side, and he is the one most likely to catch the sleep, stress or gut piece sitting underneath a weight complaint.

Co-Founder · Naturopathic Physician

Dr. Chelsea Deveson, NMD

Focused on the root causes of chronic disease. Dr. Chelsea treats thyroid conditions, autoimmunity, adrenal fatigue and burnout, PCOS (also called PMOS), perimenopause, and digestive issues, all of which can sit behind weight that will not move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hormonal Weight Gain

Onyx is primarily a self-pay clinic for appointments. Lab work is often billable to your insurance even though our visits are not, and coverage depends on your specific plan and your diagnosis codes. Many patients use HSA or FSA funds, and we can provide documentation you can submit to your insurer for out-of-network consideration.

Cost depends on your testing and your treatment plan, and we go over the full picture with you before anything begins. A deposit secures your appointment and applies toward that visit. We do not run free consultations, because your first appointment is a real clinical evaluation rather than a sales conversation.

The ones we look at most are thyroid hormones, insulin, cortisol, and the sex hormones, meaning estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Each of them can contribute to weight gain, and they very often overlap. That overlap is the reason we test them together instead of one at a time.

Diet and exercise still matter, and for many people they are not enough on their own while a hormone problem is untreated. That is not a reason to stop. It is a reason to find out what is going on underneath, so the effort you are already putting in has somewhere to land.

Some people do gain weight on hormonal birth control, and it is one of the most common things patients ask us about. Do not stop a prescription on your own. Tell the doctor who prescribed it, and tell us, so we can factor it in rather than looking for a cause that already has an explanation.

They are different starting points and they often end up together. Medical weight loss is a supervised program aimed at the weight itself. This page is about finding the hormonal reason underneath it. Some patients do one, some do the other, and plenty do both at the same time. Your doctor talks through which makes sense for you.

This varies from person to person and depends on what is driving your symptoms and which approach your plan uses. We schedule follow-up testing specifically so we are tracking your response rather than guessing at it, and we adjust from what the recheck shows.

A naturopathic doctor, an endocrinologist or a hormone-focused physician can all evaluate it. At Onyx you see a licensed naturopathic doctor (NMD), who is trained to look at how your systems interact and who typically spends considerably longer with you than a standard primary care appointment allows. We start by listening, because you know your own body better than anyone. Then we order broader testing than a routine visit runs and go through the results with you. We treat hormones alongside metabolism, nutrition and stress rather than as a separate specialty.
