Microneedling with PRP – The Vampire Facial Explained

You may have seen Kim Kardashian on her social media with a face covered in blood – no she hasn’t finally lost it – she had a vampire facial! The vampire facial is a popular anti-aging technique among celebrities.

A Vampire Facial is actually called micro-needling facial with PRP, or platelet-rich plasma. It is a phenomenal procedure for various skin concerns, including uneven skin tone, fine lines, and overall skin tone. The best part is that it is non-invasive with minimal downtime.

How Micro-needling with PRP Works

Micro-needling and PRP work together to build help the body to produce collagen in the deep layer of the skin – the dermis. Collagen is the protein that is responsible for youthful, firm skin. The natural going process, as well as sun exposure, can damage or wear out the cells that make collagen, making the skin appear less firm, hydrated, and youthful.

Micro-needling

Micro-needling causes small punctures into the dermis of the skin, using a small device called a micro-needling pen. Repetitive punctures create micro-trauma to the skin, telling your body to repair the area. It does this by laying down collagen.

In some cases, the punctures do not bleed, whereas in other cases there may be slight bleeding. The goal is not to cause a lot of bleeding, rather just penetrating deep enough to activate the cells that produce collagen – the fibroblasts.

Why Use PRP?

You may have seen micro-needling facials advertised by estheticians. Because drawing blood to derive PRP crosses the line into a medical procedure, non-medical professionals, such as estheticians are not able to perform micro-needling using PRP.

Although micro-needling alone will still have some benefit to the skin, using PRP with micro-needling is definitely superior.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is the clear part of our blood which contains immune cells which repair cuts, wounds, and trauma. This part of the blood is very high in growth factors and stem cells. These include:

  • Fibroblast growth factor
  • Transforming growth factor
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor

The job of these growth factors is to trigger collagen production, elastin production, and hyaluronic acid production in the dermis. The result – firm, even, glowing skin!

When micro-needling is used with PRP, the results are simply leveled-up. The rich supply of your body’s growth factors and stem cells coupled with the micro-trauma from the micro-needling gives the skin all the ingredients to repair an regenerate.

Preparing for Your Micro-needling with PRP Facial

When booking your appointment, make sure that you do not have to go back to work, or out in public for the remainder of the day.

Come to your appointment with clean skin and make sure you are hydrated.

The doctor will first draw your blood to spin down to create your PRP. While that process takes place, he or she will apply a topical numbing cream to your face, neck, and decollate to help reduce any discomfort.

The appointment takes around 60-75 min start to finish, and the micro-needling facial itself takes about 30 minutes or so. Afterward, you can expect to be red and a bit tender – much like a sunburn. You may have some blood spots on your face, in addition to the PRP which will remain on the entire treatment area.

Each person heals differently. Some people have slight pinpoint bruising, some people peel, and some people experience both!

Your doctor will provide you with aftercare recommendations and answer all of your questions.

After about 5-7 days, you will likely be completely healed. Many notice that they look more hydrated, refreshed, and rested.

Typically people require 3-6 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. The best part is your body will continue to lay down collagen for up to six months after your last session!
