POSTPARTUM WELLNESS
Postpartum Wellness in Gilbert, AZ
Pregnancy and childbirth can change more than your body. If you are still dealing with fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, stubborn weight, disrupted sleep, or simply do not feel like yourself months after delivery, we start by listening to what has actually changed, because you know your own body better than anyone and you have probably already been told this is just what having a baby feels like. Then our doctors look at the hormonal, nutritional, metabolic and lifestyle factors behind it, and we decide together what is worth treating first.

Still not feeling like yourself after pregnancy?
After Pregnancy
What can change after pregnancy?
Pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and the transition after weaning can affect several systems at the same time.
01
Hormones
Hormones after pregnancy do not settle all at once. Levels change dramatically during pregnancy and shift again after delivery. Breastfeeding and weaning can extend or introduce additional hormonal changes that affect symptoms such as mood, sleep, libido, and menstrual cycles.
02
Nutritional reserves
Pregnancy and breastfeeding increase nutritional demands. Iron and other nutrient stores may become depleted, particularly when combined with blood loss during delivery, restricted nutrition, or the demands of breastfeeding.
03
Metabolic health
Changes in sleep, activity, appetite, body composition, insulin sensitivity, and daily routine can all influence energy and weight after pregnancy.
04
Mental and emotional wellbeing
Mood changes are common after delivery, but persistent anxiety, low mood, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or feeling unlike yourself deserve attention rather than being dismissed as simply part of motherhood.
Common postpartum concerns we evaluate
- Fatigue
Persistent fatigue
Feeling tired is expected with a newborn. Ongoing or disproportionate fatigue may warrant evaluation of nutrition, thyroid function, metabolic health, sleep, and other contributing factors.
- Cognition
Brain fog
Difficulty concentrating, remembering things, or feeling mentally sharp can have several possible contributors, including sleep disruption, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes, and stress.
- Mood
Mood changes
Anxiety, irritability, low mood, or feeling emotionally unlike yourself may deserve a closer look, particularly when symptoms persist or interfere with daily life.
- Weight
Stubborn weight
Some patients find that pregnancy weight does not come off as expected despite changes to nutrition and activity. Metabolic, hormonal, nutritional, sleep, and lifestyle factors may all play a role.
- Libido
Changes in libido
Hormonal shifts, breastfeeding, fatigue, relationship changes, medications, and the physical recovery from childbirth can all affect sexual health.
- Sleep
Sleep difficulties
Interrupted sleep is common after having a baby. What we look for is whether something else is stacked on top of it, because thyroid, iron and hormone changes all make broken sleep hit harder than it should.
- Hair and skin
Hair and skin changes
Changes in hair shedding, skin, or other physical symptoms can occur after pregnancy and may sometimes provide additional clues about nutritional or hormonal changes.
- Cycles
Menstrual changes
Periods may take time to return after pregnancy, particularly while breastfeeding. When cycles return, changes in timing, flow, or symptoms may warrant evaluation depending on your circumstances.
Lab Work
Postpartum lab testing
Not every postpartum patient needs the same laboratory work. We start by listening to what has actually changed for you, because you know your own body better than any panel does, and then we decide together which tests are worth running. Your history, your pregnancy and delivery, your medications and the exam all factor in. Depending on your situation, that may include:
Blood counts and iron status
Thyroid function
Vitamin B12 and folate
Vitamin D
Blood glucose and A1c
Cholesterol and other metabolic markers
Hormones, including cortisol and stress-related hormones
Other nutritional or metabolic markers based on your symptoms
Lab results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and history rather than in isolation.
When postpartum weight won't budge
Weight after pregnancy is affected by much more than calorie intake. Sleep deprivation, changes in activity, nutrition, insulin sensitivity, thyroid function, medications, stress, and changes in body composition can all influence how your weight responds.
For some patients, that evaluation may lead to a personalized medical weight loss plan. For others, addressing nutrition, sleep, thyroid function, metabolic health, or another underlying factor may be more appropriate.
If you are breastfeeding, say so before anything is considered: the GLP-1 medications used in medical weight loss, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are not recommended while nursing, so the options on the table are different.

What to Expect
What does postpartum wellness care look like?
Your care starts with where you are now, not with a standard postpartum checklist.
01
Initial consultation
We go through your pregnancy and delivery, what you are feeling now, whether you are breastfeeding or weaning, your medical history, medications, nutrition, sleep and what you want to get back to. You will finish your sentences.
02
Individualized evaluation
What you tell us and what is in your history decide where we look closest, and we build the plan with you rather than hand it over. We run hormone testing for every postpartum patient, and we add thyroid, iron, nutrient or metabolic panels when your symptoms point that way. We tell you why we are ordering something before we order it.
03
Personalized plan
Depending on what your evaluation shows, your plan may include nutrition support, lifestyle changes, metabolic care, hormone-focused treatment, functional medicine, or referral for additional support when needed.
04
Follow-up
Your symptoms, progress, and relevant lab results are reviewed over time. Your plan can change as your health and postpartum needs change.
Responses vary from person to person. We will also tell you plainly when something belongs with your OB, your midwife or another specialist.
Not sure whether what you are feeling is normal? That is what a first visit is for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Postpartum Wellness
How long does postpartum recovery actually take?
Longer than six weeks, and it varies from person to person. The steep hormonal drop settles within the first few weeks for most people. Iron and nutrient stores take months to rebuild, and longer while breastfeeding. Thyroid changes can appear at any point in the first year. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists frames the postpartum period as an ongoing process rather than a single six-week endpoint.
Is this the same as seeing my OB or midwife?
No, and it does not replace them. Your OB or midwife handles delivery, the physical healing that follows, contraception and anything urgent or surgical. Postpartum wellness care at Onyx looks at energy, thyroid, hormones, nutrient status, mood and sleep. Most of our postpartum patients keep both, and your doctor is happy to coordinate with anyone else involved in your care.
When should I get my thyroid checked after having a baby?
If you are feeling unwell, it is reasonable to ask at any point in the first year, and sooner if you have a personal or family history of thyroid disease or type 1 diabetes. Postpartum thyroiditis can run overactive first and underactive later, so one normal TSH early on does not settle the question for the rest of the year. Your doctor will advise on which postpartum thyroid tests make sense for you.
Can I be seen while I am breastfeeding?
Yes. Let us know at the first visit that you are nursing and it becomes part of every recommendation after that. Supplements, herbs and prescriptions are reviewed for lactation compatibility before they are recommended, and anything without good safety data while breastfeeding is either avoided or discussed with you first. Onyx does not provide lactation consulting; if supply, latch or feeding is the main issue, we will refer you to an IBCLC.
What labs will you run, and can I use recent labs?
Bring what you have. Recent results are reviewed and reused where they are current enough. Anything beyond that is chosen at the first visit based on your symptoms, your history and your doctor’s judgement rather than ordered as a standard block. Depending on the picture that can include thyroid, iron studies, nutrient levels, blood sugar or hormone testing.
How do I know if this is postpartum depression or normal postpartum exhaustion?
It is genuinely hard to tell from the inside, which is why it is worth asking rather than waiting it out. Postpartum depression and anxiety are distinct clinical conditions with their own assessment and treatment, and that is not what general postpartum wellness care is. The CDC reports that about 1 in 8 people who give birth experience symptoms of postpartum depression. What a wellness visit adds is a look at physical factors that can contribute, such as thyroid changes and low iron, and a plain conversation about which you may be dealing with. Where mental health care is the right next step, your doctor will say so and refer: see mental health support and anxiety care. Related reading: hormone balance and mental health. Some postpartum symptoms need urgent care rather than an appointment: heavy bleeding, fever, a severe headache, vision changes, chest pain, shortness of breath, calf pain or swelling, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby. Call your OB or midwife, or 911. For mental health support, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline on 1-833-852-6262, both free and available 24 hours a day.
Does insurance cover postpartum wellness care?
Onyx is self-pay. No insurance provider in Arizona allows naturopathic doctors in network, so no ND in this state can bill insurance directly, and that is true of every naturopathic clinic here, not just ours. Self-pay does not mean cash, by the way. We take cards, and HSA and FSA funds work for most of what we do. Cost comes in three separate parts: your visit, any lab work, which the laboratory bills you directly and which varies by what is ordered, and any supplements or prescriptions. Nothing gets ordered before it has been explained to you. Call (480) 531-2557 and we will walk through your situation before you book.
Is it too late to address postpartum symptoms if my baby is more than a year old?
No. The fourth trimester has an end date; feeling unwell does not. Low iron, thyroid changes and nutrient stores that were never fully rebuilt do not resolve on a schedule, and none of them becomes harder to look at because time has passed. Several of our postpartum patients are two or more years out.
