Botox has become an extremely common treatment for women and men of all ages, but what exactly does Botox do? Botox targets a wide variety of concerns. Let’s discuss what it does, its uses, and if it is a good fit for you!
What is Botox?
Botox is a cosmetic injectable produced from a neurotoxin from the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, known as botulinum toxin A. It is diluted with saline to avoid any harmful effects from the toxin entering the skin.
The most common use of Botox is to smooth the skin, diminish the appearance of wrinkles, and prevent more from forming. Botox involves a minimally invasive treatment where the product is injected directly into the muscle beneath the skin when used for anti-aging. As the muscles relax under your skin, your skin will start to smooth. It takes roughly 10-14 days to see the complete result.

How does Botox Work?
When injected, Botox blocks nerve transmission in nearby muscles to effectively freeze the area. So even if your brain tells your facial muscle to move, Botox blocks that movement, inhibiting muscle contraction. This relaxes and softens the area so that wrinkles are smoothed while also making it less likely for new wrinkles to form.
Botox remains where it is injected, therefore it has a localized effect and will not create a systemic response. However, Botox may migrate up to 3 cm from where it was injected, but this effect is unlikely.
Once injected, a few days later, you will have noticeably smoother skin! As mentioned previously, Botox also helps prevent future wrinkles from forming. These fantastic effects last for up to four months after being injected. Once it dissipates, book another appointment at Onyx Integrative so that you can prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming in the future!

What is Botox Used For?
Botox is not just about wrinkles and fine lines. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions. With the power of blocking nerve transmission, it can treat migraines, muscular disorders, and so much more. Botox also blocks sweat glands with the same action, so it can be effective in stopping excessive sweating as well. Interestingly enough, the effects of Botox on headaches were discovered by chance. Some patients who sought Botox for wrinkle reduction and happened to experience migraines reported headache relief after treatment (Escher 2017).
The uses of Botox continue to grow to this day, but the consecutively undefeated use remains as the management of fine lines and wrinkles.

What Should I Expect for my Botox Appointment?
Before
Prior to your Botox appointment, book a consultation at Onyx Integrative to ensure we can achieve (and hopefully exceed) your desired look. This meeting also gives us a chance to review your medical history and any other medications you are on in order to establish a safe and effective treatment. After this, you will be set to come back for your aesthetic appointment.
The Day Of
On the day of your appointment, come in with a make-up free, clean face so no foreign substances interfere with the injection. The session itself will range depending on what areas you are looking to treat but will last no longer than 30 minutes.
After
The best part you may ask? Aside from achieving youthful results, there is zero downtime after the treatment. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions given, such as staying upright for 4 hours to prevent the product from shifting.
