If you are looking to learn more about how you can get the lips you dream of with fillers, you’ve come to the right place! Enhanced lips are seen with just a short scroll through social media today and often achieved through temporary lip fillers. However, being hesitant to take the plunge is normal and you are not alone. A common question that often determines the decision is how long do lip fillers last?

The short answer is, it depends! How long lip fillers last depend on factor such as:

  • Your metabolism
  • You activity levels
  • The type of filler used
  • The look you want to achieve
  • Sun exposure

So, let’s dive into what you can expect with filler, what may impact how long they last, and other common filler questions.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are derived from hyaluronic acid. This is a term you may have heard before, as hyaluronic acid is commonly found in skin serums and moisturizers. Plus, our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it grabs moisture from the air and holds it into the skin keeping the skin plump, firm, and dewy. It is a naturally produced substance in the body that can hold water up to 1000 times its own weight. This is why hyaluronic acid makes an ideal ingredient for lip filler.

Common Lips Fillers Include:

  • Juvederm (Vobella, Vollure, Ultra, Ultra Plus)
  • Restylane ( Kysse, Defyne, Refyne)
  • Versa

When your lips are injected with any of the above hyaluronic acid lip fillers, you can expect a more plump and full appearance thanks to hyaluronic acid.

Your body metabolizes the hyaluronic acid found in filler which means that fillers do fade slowly over time. Therefore, to maintain that full and pillowy look, you will need to schedule routine appointments.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Each of the above fillers will last roughly 6 months to a year on average. As previously discussed, several factors can affect the life of filler. Your metabolism, lifestyle, age, and other individual characteristics can alter the length of filler within your skin.

The fillers that last the longest in the lips are:

  • Restylane Kysse
  • Restylane Defyne
  • Juvederm Ultra
  • Juvederm Vobella

Unfortunately, Juvederm has a tendency to migraine, meaning it travels to areas of the face outside of the area it was injected. This can occur with any filler, but migration is more common with Juvederm. Therefore, although the filler may last a year before it is fully broken down, it may not remain in the lips where it was originally injected.

An important consideration to point out is that fillers slowly break down over time. Therefore, when your filler has dissolved halfway, you may find that you want another lip filler treatment to acheive the original size. This comes down to personal expectations.

How to Make Your Lip Fillers Last Longer

The best way to ensure you get the benefits of your lip filler as long as possible is to take care of your skin outside of cosmetic injections.

  • Be sure to stay hydrated – this keeps wrinkles at bay and preserves the water-loving hyaluronic acid.
  • Avoid UV exposure during peak hours and wear SPF. This will reduce your risk of inflammation leading to your filler breaking down. Plus UV rays directly break down collagen.
  • Reduce or limit long cardio exercise sessions. Running outside and/or for long periods of time leads to a quicker break down of your lip fillers.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol and cigarette smoking which leads to inflammation and collagen breakdown.

Preparing for Your Lip Filler Appointment

When booking a lip filler appointment consultation, be sure to come with specific goals of what you are looking for and your expectations. Remember to book your treatment at least 2 weeks prior to any events since bruising and swelling is common after lip fillers.

  • Do you want to achieve just a bit more natural-looking fullness like you just put on some lip liner? Or are you truly looking to achieve a whole new look?
  • Do you want more definition of your lips or a softer look?
  • What ratio of your top and bottom lip do you want?

At Onyx Integrative, we take care to help you achieve the look you want. Be sure to express your detailed desired results with your doctor, and feel free to bring in photos as well.

Juvederm and Restylane are the two most commonly used fillers for the lips. We carry both at Onyx Integrative Medicine & Aesthetics.

What to Expect at Your Lip Filler Appointment

During the appointment, your doctor will apply a topical anesthetic to your lips to numb them, making the process as comfortable as possible. After 15-30 minutes, a thin needle is used to inject filler into the lips. You may feel a pinching sensation, but the process should not be painful, the needle does not go deeper than 2.5 mm deep into your skin. Finally, we apply soft pressure to your lips to properly help the filler smooth out. Over the next few days, your lips may be slightly swollen, sensitive, or bruised somewhat, which should resolve within a day to a week at the most. After this, you will see the final outcome of your treatment.

It may be time to throw your lip liner to the side and schedule an appointment at Onyx Integrative for a consult on lip filler!
